Now and then, among his relentlessly contemporary work, Mister Caldwell posts photos like this striking one which are intensely reminiscent of Life Magazine photography of the 1930's. Of course, if Life published a dramatic portrait of a black, it was of an exploited diamond miner or honored opera singer. What is contemporary about this photo is that it is a frankly appreciative, frankly sensuous study of the beauty and desirability of an anonymous and erotically appealing man.
