About Saw this scene driving along hiway 101 in California and had to stop. This avacado orchard had been severely trimmed for some reason, leaving these stark white trunks(I think the orchardist may have whitewashed the trunks. Surrounded by barbed-wire they reminded me of prisoners stripped of all individuality.

The lighting was very glaring mid-day sun. I usually like to try a couple of different angles and settings to see what ends up looking best. This time, however, the owners of the trees pulled up in a pick-up and asked me to leave after this shot. They seemed a little hostile.

I applaud the originality of this view, but something is vaguely bugging me about the quality of the B&W image. Harsh lighting, yes, but it looks somehow oversharpened, and mid-tones are a bit "flat." Sorry not to be more positive, but I usually particularly like the tonality in your B&Ws. Were there any problems you were aware of?

really surrealism, thanks for stoping and badly treating the roof of your car ;)

Cheers,
Verena

Thanks for solving the whitewash mystery. I hadn't noticed the tilt before, but you're right. There was a slight incline to the orchard and I was standing on top of my car to get the shot. Guees I wasn't that steady.

The barbed wire fence makes the shot... not that you wouldn't have had some fun with the whitewashed trunks by themselves! The horizon is tilted. As for the reason for whitewashing, I just read online that doing so prevents sunburn to the trunk and/or branches. Mystery solved. =)

Quite a vivid imagination, I'd never would've thoguht along those lines. I've never seen an avacod orchard so the white trunks threw me. I thought you had bleached them out to give them starkness. I guess you didn't have to, they are quite the stark image.
