I looked at this picture the other day, and almost commented, didn't know quite what to say. At first, I was thinking what you, yourself thought, for some reason, about the centering, then about the dark shadow of the boats, then the coloring, then the mood, and now that I've read the comments of others, I'll just express my first thought when seeing this...I loved it!!! Wanted to be there in the quiet, peaceful, glorious.....

No Sweat MAGS......I dont mean to discourage people from getting into camera clubs because they could be fun....but the judging and rating of photos is nonsense....they go strictly by textbook rules and as we know,Rules are obeyed by fools and the wise man uses them only for guidance...
Back in the 70's I was asked to jury and evalute and as the judges discouraged so many people I looked over the photos that were turned down as acceptable and the ones that were selected as the best and than the judges own personal pics brought along for examples of quality work....I was than supposed to evaluate for all.....Only one of the pics the judges selected I agreed on... three of the pics the judges turn down I gave 1st, 2nd, 3rd prize to...and non of the judges photos passed at all.......non of the pics were marked so I didnt do it on purpose....it was purely the truth....sure pissed off a lot of people that day....see what matters in Mr Whaley's pic is; sure its on the center big shit....but the masts and riggings trancends that line and lead you above and below it quite well and lead you through the frame......you've heard me say many times here center that image.....because as long as your moving around the central point or if the subject benefits from centering than do it.......now if you look through my stuff on my site or here you'll see centered images and my reputation is built on my capabilities for composition and lighting....

And to Chris your more the welcome.....when I see a Guy like you improve so drastically over the past few months it is worth every hour I spend on here to help.....you have come so far and its on your own really Chris.....you should be really proud of yourself and your accomplishments....I enjoy looking at your work and your evaluations of others is also helping you to improve....your really up the ladder as a photographer and I dont mean in any one class I mean compared to all, beginner , intermediary or pro....keep it up....

I was hoping this would get me off the hook...:)...Thanks Artie, Maggie, and Tobias.

Tobias..I believe this was at f 16, around 70mm on the lense, and used a tripod...sorry that I can't recall the shutter speed.

Artie and Maggie..it is funny though...I sat there for a long time looking at this because of the horizon thinking about it being centered.

Artie..thanks for taking the time to go through everybody's pictures, every day...I enjoy reading the comments and learning from them....I know it takes alot of time...It Is Greatly Appreciated.....Thanks for all your help, Artie.

*LOL*LOL* well Paw...I knew I didnt have to voice my sentiments about camera club judging...I knew you would do it much more eloquently than I ever could *G*wink* and I thank you *smile*

This "centered horizon" and "centered subject" thing have always bugged the hell out of me. The comment was made as a statement against this rule and to point out to people that it can work very well as it did in Chris' image.

Thanks for saying what I would have liked to say Paw!!! *BG*.... Mags... (Maw)

to Mags...and thats why camera club judges either sell life insurance during the day or Kirby Vacumns.......
centered or not what matters is what is above and below it...Mr. Whaley Nailed this image beautifully....
Camera clubs are just that.....clubs.....Chris is light years beyond that mundane BS rhetoric....
I know your not picking on my man Chris Maw but those clubs Pi'' me off so I thought I'd vent........

Chris...I love this shot. Very good lighting. Do you happen to remember any of the tech detail such as f-stop, shutter speed, etc? Filters? I'm new...hahaha. Sorry for the green questions.
