About The original transparency of the stones had a plain, pale-grey sky significantly lighter than the stones so it was easy to select using the Magic Wand tool.

To make it easier still I duplicated the original image and increased the contrast making the sky much lighter still. With selection in place on this layer I then dumped it leaving it in place on the original layer.

I then inverted the selection and applied a small amount of feathering and contracted the selection by the same amount.

I next copied this and pasted it onto the sky image. I checked the outline at 100% to see if there were any give-away edges, there are always some. In which case I dump the pasted layer and go back to the selection altering the feathering and degree of contraction then recopying and pasting until I feel it 's the best I can get.

At this stage I go to Layer/Matting and apply a little Defringing.

With the two images still on separate layers I adjust the density, contrast and colour balance of each until I feel they are well balanced.

When I think I?ve done the best I can with the separate layers I flatten the image and look again at 100%. If there are still a few places where you can see the join, I use the Cloning tool to remove them. I will also select any areas where the join looks too well defined and apply a little Gaussian Blur.

The amounts of contraction, feathering, defringing and gaussian blur will be dependant upon the size of the image/file.

There's another method I use for adding skies where there's a more difficult outline or horizon. I'll post an example later on.

I was at Stonehenge a few years back & it certainly didn't look like this! Naturally, my images are pretty uneventful as well.
You certainly put in a lot of effort on digital manipulations & the results have been awesome. Good work!

Michael, you could have just bought a postcard! :) Lovely photo & well worth the work. It looks great. I've got a load of dull grey stonehenge photos so I might try it myself. Thanks for the tips!

Michael,
Great color in both the sky and the stones. I think you did an amazing job of manipulation to get the sky perfect.
Great Work!!
