P.S. I just found a Wikipedia page on daguerreotype. It also says about redaguerreotyping. Unfortunately, I could not recall the name of the Bengali book, where I read about these techniques long ago.

If I am not mistaken, you were discussing about "Daguerreotype". So far I remember now, I read somewhere that there was something called "redaguerreotyping", a technique to copy Daguerreotype images. Personally, I liked the rectangular photo better. The square format, however, adds "something special".

It was widely used from 1839 to 1855 and was the first popular form of photography. Images were captured directly on a thin piece of silver plated copper. Because no negative was produced copies could not be made so each image was unique.

I love it. This is an excellent shot. Like the framing and undoubtedly it is a great moment and composition with apt tone.

I accidentally got cut off somehow and my comment was submitted prematurely (power surge perhaps). Anyway ... It is a type of print kind of a subdued sepia which works well in this case I think per the attached. What do you think?

Avi (via Txules who speaks much more Diplomatically than me:),
He has much more clearance with his left foot now because I increased the shadow of the interior of this hut. Also, have either one of you ever heard of 'Daguerreo

square format works well, yes. the rest is just the moood that I saw there, in general (very dark and gloomy).. I guess most of my Africa shots convey this, in general..
I wasn't really trying hard to get a composition.. just tried to use the bamboo sticks to form a frame..

I appreciate your time on this image, Doug. I agree with you on the square format and space at the bottom. The rest is kind of my personal taste, and anyway I am too lazy to spend a lot of time in post processing.
best regards, Avi

I missed the african series, Avi a difficult shot (as many in Africa) due to strong contrast producing many times underxposed images; you have 3 options: use a fill flash (not a good idea in my opinion), create a silhoutte (sometimes is fine) or blown out the higlights (sky) unless you use a graduated ND filter; last but not least use PS to try to recover some details on the shadows but increasing the overall noise anyway, it's a fine image, a bit underxposed though; square format works well too take care mate jd

First off ... We might have some National Geographic Material here at first impression so my compliments to you for that! Although, I am sincerely concerned about a few matters Professionally if it were to possibly become Front Cover or a Full Page Interior or otherwise:
1. You obviously locked focus by the composition 'As Is' on his Left Shoulder including the verticalness of the cane and left it at that with no cropping ... Correct?
2. The contrast is too dark for repro printing because of a loss of detail in any facial expression whatsoever. Do you agree?
3. Back to the composition and I am not going to let you off on this: There is most definitely not enough 'Free Space' at the bottom border by his left foot .. Yes/No?
4. So let's do this (if you don't mind of course): Lighten the Contrast, Square Format Crop, Dust out some white spots, and then give the entire scene a very Special Presentation Border with Typo Credits.
I truly hope you appreciate my time on this image of yours ...
Best of Regards!

Hallo Avi,I really think that the sepia tone can really invoke an emotion that color and black and white can't. It's more intimate than color and warmer than black and white. I like to mix a sepia tone with a little bit of the original color to maximize the warmth of the picture...thanks for your kind comment,
Riny
