Txules started an interesting discussion about eye contact, but I find myself disagreeing with him. Sometimes the subject does not want to make eye contact, not only because they are shy in front of the lens but also because there may something else out of sight that has captured their interest. To me, in a genuine candid shot, that 'captured interest' is as much a part of the person and their environment as a full face eyes at camera portrait. I thought that's what had happened here when I first viewed the image. Something else I like about the image is the focus on the jewellery, and I think the wide angle view and the gentle toning work well too. Regards, Gary

Amazing! The camera caught the defining details of the face and reconstructed with them textures, plasticity, expression! The exposure's balance made a very detailed high fidelity study of human expression!
But it did even more too. It placed the right amount of light for just that little subtle dramatourgy that adds interest and amazement but avoiding to exaggerate that to the levels of modern advertisement. So it really fits the already mentioned seriosity of study, Avi! I don't think that anything else could match better the attitude of the image.
The timing goes exactly this way too, captivating that special moment and extracting it out of the continuum of time. The tight but still well balanced composition stays in tune with that and with the great DoF that defined the scene behind the woman but also allowed her to be the protagonist there.
Perfekt to me! Should go for an award consideration, I think.
Cheers!
Nick

Ok, I think I understand what you mean. Because of the closeness that the viewer feels with the subject, you are suggesting that eye contact helps establish a relationship. Hmmm, you have a point there. But I would still say it's a preference, and I actually feel a little uncomfortable looking at such 'candid' portraits (because that's what they are) where the subject is looking straight at me. Intimate portrait, of course, is an exception.. there you NEED eye contact most often than not. Same with strong emotional portraits..
And I totally understand and agree with your point about the subject being at a comfortable distance from the viewer.
btw, your stolen portrait was terrific.. missed it earlier.
and please, no formalities with me.. so, please no 'forgive my arrogance but i give some examples in my folio' and don't care about ANY rework you do on any of my images ! :)
cheers ! Avi

good point Avi, eye-contact is not always neccessary but in very tight portraits (even here there are exceptions) because the main focal point are the eyes, eyes say almost all about the person; what is doing this man?, apart from posing (well, i admit it might be a candid as well), we need a close relationship to the subject because there is nothing else (I admit again here we can find a beautiful sky); you know I love portraits from the back (no eye-contact at all, but i think there is s different situation); not sure if i explained well; please forgive my arrogance but i give some examples in my folio: the three first have eye-contact the fourth not, the difference is very evident http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=1185453 http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=1185677 http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=1191332 http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=1189362 plase let me know jd

everything else you said I accept, but I want to know why is eye contact so important in such a 'non-studio' portrait ? I feel eye contact makes it too much 'in your face' and kills the subtlety.

Fill flash would have made a tremendous difference here Avi. Other than that it is a nice shot. I like her expression and the fact that is not making eye contact with you.

Nice documentary of this Masaai, you have done a nice job in the daylight as well. The harshness of the environment and rich, dark tones is good. Be well, Stan

nice in the face portrait but have several flaws in my opinion: there is no eye contact, I think that's important, tonal range is a bit flat and not crazy with the tone, I beleive it should be either pure black (I mean pure deep black and white) or a less intense sepia tone love the angle, and vignetting take care....jd
