Here is one of mine with a similar idea. I just pushed the contrast to the extreme in Picture It. Of course mine is in color, but could easily be converted to B&W.:)

It's essentially the image copied twice Shirley, with Threshold applied to both. The more dense layer was mostly transparent, creating the light gray effect, since a threshold image is either black or white.
