The "emptiness" of the composition introduces also a strong "purity". The character reminds me a bit of the statues on the island of Pasqua. A bit silent, a bit unexplainable, but also directly visible and tangible on this world of us.
The plasticity of the face was kept and enhanced to a very high degree though there seems to be some softening of details and some strong shadows especially near the left edge of the image. The expression... it is a lack of expression - completely neutral. This induces the look of a study of a character rather than any "artificially overwhelming" moment, and thus it goes more to the region of timeless images. The lighting did a very good job for that too.
