Peter - Thank you. Yes, I seem to recall having seen shots here set up as you describe which produced a similar result. Hmmm... then if I were to invert those shots they would resemble flames. Very interesting prospect.

hi there, nice to see you are still outside the square.
the one simple colour brings out the high key lighting very well
you could try coloured ink lighted by a white sheet of card behind the water with a diffused light of flash on it.
slow shutter speed has great patterns in the water,as well try stirring the water before the ink
