About There is something going on around these parts what makes me crazy. In the public school system (and maybe private schools as well) there is this thingy known as a “homework pass.” A bit/scrap of paper that allows a child/student a “pass” on a homework assignment. If they did not do the homework and had a “pass” they could turn in the script and not be penalized. The students can earn these passes in a variety of ways. Not missing class, doing well on a quiz… random drawing… whatever. My point is this: Rather than giving students a pass on homework… shouldn’t we kick things up a bit and make MORE students do homework? When my bairns were younger and in the public school system in the States (Colonies) MM and I had this arrangement wiff them: “If you earn, in any way, a homework pass and you save it, do NOT use it, then you turn all your passes in to me or your mother… we will take you to the store and buy you………. a book. NOT a silly or useless book, but a book of value and meaning so you have a foundation on which to build your personal library.” This pic is of some books Eli picked out after turning in her homework passes to MM and me. Brought a tear to my eye it did… when she grabbed “The Scarlet Pimpernel” and told me, ‘I want this one because I have already read it twice.’ Every once in awhile a good bit of parenting brings in the rewards.

Dead on! Set the bar of expectation high and make the kids shoot for it. Hold them accountable... and sit back with them on winter nights and laugh and love... because they are not just kids... they are wonderfully productive and interesting members of society.

Just saying... MM and I never gave the kids an easy way out... we encouraged and forced and expected a lot out of them...

I'm with you...do more, learn more.

Over the past 25 years I must have read Gone with the Wind seven or eight times...never loses it's appeal.

Great photo, great story Jim.

this is a nice composition, I like the texture of the books, the color, etc. very tactile and warm image.
