Good grief, that was rude. "Bad form" is in the eye of the beholder, not written in stone.
Les, you don't say what lens you were using, so I don't know if you could get closer or not. The grasshopper is sharp (well done!) and the grasses are not, so I assume you were using a wide aperture. If this were mine, I would probably crop it to something along these lines (see attachment). Cropping also makes a positive out of the narrow dof, imho. ;) So please don't be disheartened if you don't get quite what you were expecting - the digital darkroom offers more opportunities for us all.
When we were in South Dakota last year, we drove through clouds of these critters - the nose of the car was plastered with them. Thank goodness it was a rental and I didn't have to wash it.
