About Straight from my backyard today. Macro shot with 36mm Kenko Ext. Tube and lens at 85mm. Bees were so docile today... it was fun shooting them up close but getting a winner wasn't so easy... they are pretty active. My dog, Sugar, even sat beside the flowers and never once bothered the bees... incredible for a Jack Russell Terrier! Cropped to 50%.

Don't think the faster lens will help if you are going to stop down to say f/16, but you may get some cool selective focus effects at f/1.8. The working distance with a 50mm lens and extension tubes will be minimal for doing insects. If you can afford it some day, a dedicated macro lens at 100 or 150mm would help you a lot! Some of the medium telephotos, with tubes or diopters are also a useful option.

Super tips, Eb. Thanks a million!! I figured out pretty quickly about focusing by moving back and forth... was just too much work moving the focus ring manually and auto focus doesn't seem to do well for closeups either. I was hand-holding but I don't think I'm real steady and it was a bit windy... besides I am very impatient (I know, not a good thing, but I am working on it). Fortunately this lens does have "Image Stabilization", but I'm thinking of using the 50mm f/1.8 next time for more light, tradeoff is that it doesn't have IS, but that's ok. Thanks again for the great comments and tips... they are encouraging and will come in handy as I hope to improve my technique.

Thanks, Rich! I'm jealous... I won't be at Salt Point until July... then I'm staying for 9 days!! Hasn't the weather been just absolutely wonderful here lately? I spent 4 days at Clear Lake over Easter weekend. Have you been there? It is a great place for bird photography - it has been designated as an "Important Bird Area" by the Nat'l Audubon Society. Lots of cool turtles sunning on logs in the water too. I'll send you an email shortly - thanks!

Try hand holding or a monopod. You may need a bright day and/or flash technique. Focus manually by moving your body and camera. With your combo, 1/250 sec. would be good enough for stopping the action hand held, if you have good technique. That should get you a smaller aperture! Good-luck!

Hi Rich... great shot!! Have you been to my backyard without me seeing you? ;-) Looks like we captured the same bee almost on the same flower! Ironic how the titles are the same too!

Thanks for viewing my photo.
Best regards,
Brigitte

Eb, thank you so much for your kind and detailed critique. I appreciate the time you took to leave these great comments. This was one of the first shots I took with my new extension tubes and they will definately require some practice, lots of it... and a steady tripod and a calm, windless day. My lenses aren't particularly fast so I couldn't close down the shutter the way I'd like to, but I will work on it. I did increase the ISO to 1600, but it was also a bit windy today. I think I should be able to get more of the subject in focus next time. It certainly is a challenging type of photography, but one I get a great deal of pleasure from in viewing. I *really* loved the macros in your portfolio and I'm learning from your work also. Thanks again... best regards, Brigitte

The important parts are in focus and there is a dynamic feeling in your composition, Brigitte. For this kind of photography, you will need to experiment with smaller lens opening for depth of field - or, alternatively, as you did go for a shallow dof and selective focus. 'Thouh, I think max. dof and paralleling the subject is the challenge in macros!
