that excactly is the reason that gives you the right to use a pretty fast exposure Ronen... yea, and after that the flash in normal mode cames after the curtin so the result is to have light at the foreground BUT the light wasn't get the background and so these bright colors... think that EVEN with that small distance I have difficulties to use a very small aperture and so I could want even bigger flash OR even two of them... of excample at a small bug that looks like with a butterfly (that I had upload lately...) you can see a dark image... that is because even I use not soooo fast exposure, even I use the powerfull 580II flash, I could not get a very bright image, these of course on f/45!!!!!

hi John thanks for the long explaination but that something i'm aware of, what i didnt understand is how an ordinary flash can be use on something 24cm away from the camera, mine cant be use for such purposes as it wont reach the object and i need to work with extention cable and a mini tripod from the side,i got a ringflash but it flatten the pic so i'm hardly use it. hope i make my quastion clear this time thanks for your patient

hahaha... still I use my nees to be closed to the plants... of course I cannot take lot of shots like that with different ways, one, a bit higher speed, second, a bit smaller aperture three... ouchssss.... and up! :-D

thanks so much Ronen for your kind comment... well I use normal flashs, the most of the times the camera's flash and less times my Canon Speedlite EX580II, the light is very strong for these distances BUT that has a good side too... that you can use smaller apertures and faster exposures so you can hold your camera with your hands and not need a tripod (especialy on fast moving bugs or bees!) after that, the flash works like erasing the background from the photo, it support mostly the object that you focus and was closer to the lens and the background can be EVEN black, like a studio photo, even you take the shot on a sunny day!!! I don't use slave flashes, only one, even I think that could be great to erase the shadows of the background... but the ultimate flash is a ring flash that is special for that kind of photos... be well my friend!

How is your poor back doing...loll Being that tall and bending over all this way, you should take care..hahaa But 24 cm's seems like far away for this little creature...I have to get as close as 5 cm's to get this..:)) Maybe thats why I fail mostly with macro's...xx

thanks Jen for your kind comment! hahaha... yea, I am big and tall for greek guy (lol... 1.87, 112kg) however thaqt flower's petals was about 3mm long each!!! (I use Canon 20D with 1.6X on sensor, 2X converter and Sigma 150mm macro, that means I focus from 24cm using 150X2X1.6= 480mm on 1:1 from that small distance...

thanks a lot Khan for your kind comment... hehe... I like to play with the composition of a tele converter and an 1:1 macro lens, believe me they works fine (ok without auto focus...) but with that composition we can have more than 450mm at 1:1 lens focusing at 24cm and without need to spend lot of money... be well Khan!
