Thank you for your comment Peter.
Thanks for all your continued suggestions and help. I couldn't agree more with your comments and what you've done with the image in terms of post processing. I appreciate all your help and showing me another aspect of presenting the image in terms of how you saw the moment when you took it. Thanks again for all your help.
All the best, Ed

No problem Ed. I had another go at the image. Now there are some errors and that's basically due to the small posting size and with a full version, you'd get cleaner lines and less noticeable edits. So this one has the flock behind isolated with the lasso again (magic wand can't separate the Pelican head from the background enough). Then I dropped the levels about 10% and increased the saturation about 10%. Then increased the dynamic contrast of the entire scene. The whole idea is to make the Pelican pop more from the background. The problem with a digital camera is the dynamic range compared to film is reduced and it can't seperate the subjects enough (why we get blown highlights so often). So it needs a little "help" to bring the image to what was actually seen by our eyes. It's still subtle from the original but I think it makes a difference. I'm just learning this myself and plan to take a class soon. It's far more complex than it appears, once you dive into PP.

Thank you for your comment Peter.
And thank you very much for your suggestions and your graphical demonstration. I still don't really know what I am doing when it comes to photo editing, so I certainly welcome any and all comments and suggestions when it comes to post processing, especially those as constructive as yours.
All the best, Ed

Wow, that is a really huge flock! I tried a little adjustment and it would be easier and more effective with the original but basically I isolated the background birds from the pelican with the Lasso tool (It's much easier with a tablet and pen but not bad with a mouse) Then just decreased the contrast and brightness. I should have increased the colour or saturation a little as the difference is subtle but possible.
Non of this takes away from a wonderful capture. The bokeh is excellent and the sharpness of the Pelican is well captured. A much tougher shot to get than most would think. Very well done. ptz1961@hotmail.com

Thank you for your comment Peter.
And thank you for your suggestion, although it might be easier said then done. The "rock wall" you are referring to is actually hundreds of flamingos as can be seen shots from my first safari such as: http://www.usefilm.com/image/1149130.html So I am not too sure how easy it would be to darken the pink of the flamingos, without affecting the colours of the pelican. Any ideas on method or demonstrations of your suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

It's a great capture without doubt. Good exposure and very sharp. The wing is marginally sharper than the head but who cares, it's still a great capture? I like the DOF of the rest of the image. I might suggest though, that you try to darken the rock wall behind the head/body to try and give the two some distinction from each other.

Very nice inflight shot, Ed! Great detail, right down to the water droplets falling off him. Dave.

Now THAT's a shot! The focus is perfect; you even have the little droplets behind him (her?), too.

Thank you for your comment Gust@vo.
But I am not sure I agree with the DOF, I think I have to much focus on the wing and not enough on the head.

Buen enfoque, correcta DOF, solo me parece que falta contraste entre el primer plano y el fondo.
Un abrazo!
