Mary! It has been awhile since ya popped in on one of mine. I read yer bio. Astronomy? I have a wee story to tell about that. (Seems I have wee stories to tell about everything)
20 years ago I entered a pawn shop and saw a telescope. It was nothing. Not very big, limited abilities… 100% beginner. I paid maybe $5.00 American for it. Toted it home and on a summer night set it up in the backyard. I lived then (as now) in a very rural community. Deep summer nights with no ancillary lights.
I have 3 children. The oldest is 29, then 25 and 22. That night, back when, the middle child (Nathan) went out into the yard with me. We found Saturn. In the telescope, 20 years ago, Saturn was no bigger than a needle point. The rings appeared as one. I thought it was pretty dang cool. I had no idea how it affected Nathan.
Two weeks ago Nathan was accepted into the University of Illinois Aerospace Engineering program. His goal is to work at NASA. He told me the night he saw Saturn started it all.
Again, thanks for stopping by. Don’t be a stranger!
Jim
