these ruins go back to the Omayyad period of Arabic empires, around 1200AD. This is part of what used to be a mosque, a palace, and marketplace. The stones with which everything was built are collected from all castles and fortresses ruined in the battles the Omayyad prince won. In other words, he used to fight, win, destroy others, collect the nice decorated stone peices and built his palace and mosque. Clever! The ruins were descovered back in 1930's as Armenian pilgrims were trying to set tents in the area.
