I like some paraler lines into your composition...like a quitar! Interesting and the desaturation works on that. The 'fat' lines gives a 3D idea...like they are much closer to the watcher than the others, ....thinking of an X-ray picture taken by someone that eat....hmmmm don't know what but that greyscale gives strongly the X-ray pixture idea!
Best regards!

Valek - Thanks. Glad you like it. I like the association with the futurists. They were very interested in speed (of course this was the turn of the last century so speed for them was maybe 20 mph).

Andre - No hurting brain. I'm no scientist. Just an observer of science. Though I do read some pretty heady books. Anyway, the point is... well I have no point. Ok, look, 'us parents'? I'm nearly 40. Ain't I one of you yet?

Hi James, I read your conversation with Nick... A discussion between a Mathematician and a Scientist!!! My brain hurts!!
Ps I like the line in your web page bio that says you are scarred for life from being force fed The Beatles and The Doors by your parents. I guess it's what us parents do :) Andre

Andre - No problem. Sounds like a great opportunity. Be sure and keep me posted about the results. Here is a conversion where Nick and I have been talking about luxagraphic techniques:

I'll think about the collaboration you mentioned.

Hi James, Thanks for the explanation. You have given me a few ideas to try some things. We are involved in designing interior ambient lighting for the auto industry where I work. So, I have access to several kinds of acrylic light pipes and LEDs. Andre

Andre - Thank you.
I think perhaps you have misunderstood this photograph. These luxagraphic shots of mine can be very tricky to interpret especially as the complexity increases. First let me say that this is not a still photograph. In order to create this photograph the camera was in motion. The lines you see are created from the various light sources drawing on the photograph as the camera passes over them in the room. Though the motions required can be very small the results can be very large in scope.
The rope lights which are so often a subject of my luxagraphic work can be seen here drawing a set of several thin parallel lines which run diagonally across this photograph. These lines inspired the Lute in the title. Rope lights don't normally look like this. Here is a place which sells rope lights so you can see what I am talking about:
http://www.coolstuffcheap.com/ropelights.html
Depending on the motions used, the lines can get very complicated or be quite elegant and simple. Here is a shot made of a rope light subject (with luxagraphic camera motion) which is on the elegant and simple side:

I hope that helps to clear matters up.

Hi James, I think it was a good choice to go with B&W with this one and the one before. There is a really nice kind of softness around the edges of the larger tubes/ropes. Andre

Roger - So here is the story about the title. At first I was reminded of a guitar under x-ray. Then I thought of the lute (and the oud) because it has more strings. As I was thinking abou this (a lot goes into my titles) it occurred to me that the lute would have to be in motion, say, dancing. From all that, the title was obvious: Tango X-Ray Oud. But I didn't want to give anyone VietNam flashbacks.

Roger - Cool. I'll check out this method. Sounds simple enough. I don't know jack about channel mixing (in PS, a little more in Pro Tools).

yeah I dont do grayscale conversions anymore I use the desaturate method >Image>Adj>Desaturate but a lot of pros I know amend em using the chammel mixer.. I can see their point but in the end most of my stuff goes on the web where.. really who ferkin cares about a subtle shift from zone 7 to 7.5?? no bastard

Roger - Thanks. This was shot in b&w mode on my camera.
I have tried using just the grayscale conversion in PS and wasn't all that impressed by it. I've asked a couple of photographers here about making that kind of conversion but they tend to guard their so called secret pretty thoroughly.
I'll probably do a search some time for conversion methods (google) and there will be a bazillion tutorials on different ways to do it. Can't be so very difficult.
