Hmm... an interesting debate! I am so relieved that you and Liz think my work is somewhat more 'refined' than the photographer whose style mine is supposed to resemble! For me, it is a question of how you approach taking a photograph. With this one, I saw her yellow dress and shades, thought... hmm... might make a photo... then she stopped at the crossing and pressed the button to get the traffic to stop... the yellow casing echoed her dress... the graphic elements of the potential image appealed to me... I thought of a photograph by Guy Bourdin that I loved... and then pressed the shutter button. Often the people in my photos are almost incidental in the sense that I'm often looking at body posture, colour of clothing, style of dress, contrasts with background etc etc in order to make a successful composition. The humanity of the person in the photo starts to show through for me after the event, a lot of the time, but not always. There is always a point to why I take a photograph of one person and not another... it is never just some voyeuristic pleasure! I have taken images in which I know the person photographed wasn't best pleased to be in it, but that I can live with because I am taking their photo with good faith and because I have things to say. Very few people enjoy being photographed in the street (I wouldn't...) but it is hardly some abuse of human rights if a photographer does so. I want to communicate my feelings about the world we live in, and people need to be in my photos some of the time for me to do that.... but I always approach the subject with respect, even if I'm quite bullish about getting the image.

you don't want to get into the lucas debate!!! this is not like a Lucas shot at all...for one, this one says the photographer has an idea about what he is doing, and it represents fine street photography....
