Not sure if this will help Lucas but when I am out for street shots I first find a good place with a simple or interesting background with some good difused light (early morning or late afternoon). It can help to increase the aperture in order to make your subject stand out by bluring the background. Have a look at some of my cuba images to see what I mean. Hope this helps.
