Hi Robbie, I shoot from a monopod. Although not as flexible/nimble as Marcus and Yamil who shoot handheld, it's ok. I use a ball head on my tripod however. A pan and tilt head will not be as quick to adjust for flight photos.
I use 3D matrix metering since it meters the whole image rather than a specific area - I only use spot metering for really difficult subjecs with a wide range of lighting. For birds, 3d matrix works.
The pros - John Shaw, Moose Peterson I think use a wimberly gimbal attached to their tripod - this offers the most flexibility. The sidekick is a smaller setup for lens such as yours. See link: http://www.tripodhead.com/products/sidekick-main.cfm http://www.johnshawphoto.com/equipment.htm
Anyway, happy shooting! Keep those osprey shots coming.

Thanks for the tips Jinggoy,I am shooting on a tripod because I can`t handhold with 300/1 plus tc 1.4 unless I increase my ISO.Never tried a monopod but thought about it,which one do you used? Was researching out tripods there is one that has a two way pan,up /down and sideways that is suppose to be good for inflight capture. What`s your opinion? Re camera setup.I shoot AF-C,spot metering and most times center focus depending on the time to focus on the eyes.if I am anticipating a take off I will focus lower to leave room for the expansion of the wings. My setup is working ok after I went to http://www.steves-digicams.com/2006_reviews/d200.html. Thanks for continued support. Robbie

Hi Roby, Your ability to get close to these guys is just amazing. I went back and re-read the auto-focus section on the manual of the D200, played around with it and was amazed at it's ability to grab focus quickly and acurately. It's features definitely need to be studied more. That said, one tip I is if you can shoot from a monopod, do so, it will give you the best results - given your lens doesn't have IS or VR, camera shake aside from the bird movement will work against you and produce blurry shots. But the quickness of the AF on the camera will really give you the shot you need. Make sure you have it on Continous shooting mode and AF Pattern One, center focus...
