Wow Marcus. Dude, you got the WHOLE background out of focus . . . I can barely make out the land and sky delineation.
BWAHAHAhahahahaa! Sorry but there's just nothing to critique (as usual) so I'll get in line with the rest and say ( * GASP * ) . . . "WoW" :)

Another fantastic in flight shot Marcus. I enjoyed reading the detailed explanation that you gave to Pat Oates. It is so easy to take these great shots for granted. When we see so many good ones. When we read this type of explanation it helps to understand what kind of work and skill go into getting these shots.
I like the way you describe how you track the birds down without a blind or even a tripod. It almost seems a bit like fishing in a river. You have to know where to go, how to get there and then have the skill to get them to strike.

Hi Pat, The D200 with the 1.5 crop gives you a EFL of 600mm on your 400 2.8 That is some pretty good reach. I know getting close to the birds is very hard but typically with that lens you should be getting sharp flight shots at 25 yards and in,all things considered, good lighting shutter speed should be twice that of your EFL. or say 1200 min. If you do feel you want more reach and you are ok shooting Manual focus "which makes you twice the photographer I am :)" I would defenitly go with the Nikon, much better glass, and a very sharp prime lens, The Sigma is a zoom and you do pay a price in IQ and sharpness with zooms, you could expect some softness at 800mm maybe even a bit closer, Either of the 800mm lenses at 800 would be tripod only as that length on a croped camera is way too much to handhold and get sharp shots, my experience has showed me that about 650mm including crop is about max, so if on a tripod and good at MF I would go with the nikon, Though I think whatever is causing you lack of detail I would try to work that out If possible, I know the lens and it is actually a bit sharper then my 400mm. As far as blinds I never use them most of my shots are from watching and positioning myself in a way that I know the birds flight path will be in my direction. This may sound funny but getting to know the different birds and there habits really gives me the edge I need, I also only shoot handheld and am never in the same spot for very long.. By the way I only moved over to Canon with digital, I did use and 8008s and a N90s during my film days.. well hope this helps, would be happy to answer any other questions you may have, feel free to email me at support@armaniphotography.com .. Take Care Pat...

Marcus - Just about perfect positioning on the hawk in flight! Your portfolio is very impressive. I have a question concerning photographing birds - do you set up in some sort of blind in order to get close? I use a Nikon 400mm f/2.8 which is really sharp but have found that in order to get the level of detail I want, it is really not enough if I can't get any closer than, say, 25-feet. Do you know anything about the Sigma 300mm-800mm f/5.6? If given a choice between the Sigma and the Nikon Manual Focus 800mm, which do you think would provide better results (even though you shoot Canon)? Thanks for any input you can provide.

Wonderful detail on this magnificent bird! I like the bold contrast of colors, too: the warm, crisp coloring of the bird against the cool blue hues of the background. You can just feel the intensity of this bird's soul revealed through its sharp, searching eye. Well done!

Thanks Robby, I was just by your portfolio and you seem to be mastering this art! I love your IRs but your bird shots are looking excellent now. Dont know if I will be seeing any awards in the near future, but you thinking it deserves one is better than anything little icon they could apply :) take care and Merry Christmas to you and yours also..
