Thanks Subrotoda, will surely look into it. However, though I like macro/close ups when nicely done, that is definitely not my strength area ... this is only my second tryst with close ups :)
Yes, I think I have already told you that the flower is Nayantara, but about half the size of normal pink ones . I am not sure about the ant, but if you have identified it, it sure must be.

Bijit ! To me it looks like a 'Fire Ant' and the flower is 'Nayantara' which comes in white and pink and yellow variants. Suggest you see a thread in JJMPF (you are a member) by a guy named 'Niloyd' and see how he has shot these Fire Ants with his D200. I think the thread is named 'Fire Ants'. Please see and let me know your views.

This is a red ant. And I guess the size of the flower is understandable if it is compared to leaves, which are smaller toward the bud generally (undernourished ;-) I have to admit). Honestly speaking, I didn't see it with naked eyes...I was basically testing my camera with the 70-300 on my terrace, when I suddenly saw this through the lens and fired 4-5 shots in motor drive. The first couple of them had shakes, this one didn't have shake but had a motion blur, so I thought of keeping this one.

If the ant was 1 mm and the flower 8 mm (looks like Nayantara to me which are usually bigger than 8 mm), this is a 'Macro'! How could you manage to see a 1 mm ant anyway ? It must be a wee smaller than the common black ants we find all around.

Yes, the ant was 1mm :) and the flower was 8 mm diameter.

All your points agreed. With a 70~300 mm I have seen absolutely mesmerising true 'Macro' shots in other Galleries. Yes ! you did carefully choose the words 'Close up' but the category under which this picture appears is 'Macro'. Perhaps the ant was too small compared to the capability of your 70~300 mm APO.

I have used Sigma 70-300 APO at 300 mm and almost at the minimum focussing distance (about 1.5 ft from the object), at which, it is 1:2 (as per the documentation). I have used it on a 1.6x body, which means the magnification is even more :) However, just magnification does not make a macro, and I never called it a 'Macro' - I rather very carefully used the word 'Close-up' wherever I could, as I also do not feel it is a proper 'macro' shot - it is not so technically IMO - thanks for documenting the point for all to notice. I too second the opinion that 'Macro' is too loosely used a word these days. Thanks once again for your comments.

for me its a stunner, I do some macros / florals for some years now , these shots are nirmally very difficult to capture. Great job.

Looking good at 'Medium' size but at 'Large' option, the green stumps are overpowering IMHO. It needs a greater magnification (at least 1:2) to call it a 'macro'. This term is used loosely these days. It is a very good 'Floral'shot. Much greater sharpness is needed in a true 'Macro' picture.

Ok, 400D is giving good colors (this was AWB), good sharpness (you can even see the web on the flower), low noise (this is ISO 400), and holds good in hand (this shot is handheld with a longish Singma lens at 300mm ~480mm on 400D) and captures motion nicely (it was windy, so you can see the petals of the flower move). But generally speaking, this is not much above a test shot.

Honestly speaking, I do not think it is a stunning shot by any means :) . But thanks for your appreciation.
