Dear Nick You´ve a way of writing what I´m thinking and feeling. What an intruder!;-) I agree with you completely. The shiny new houses where everything works well doesn´t necessarily provide a home - just a facade. A home consists of something very different. Atmosphere, mess, cracks, colours, love:-) All the best, Annemette
Exactly Annemette, exactly! You saw through my eyes!
Old house, yes, had no double glass windows, and no electronic heat control, no air condition, not even a lift. But, hell, it was a *home*! With its distinct facade, its welcoming garden, its own problems, yes, but also its own character, that offered so many people a place to be themselves!
Now we will get a new age architectural wonder made of steel and glass, that looks like a cube. (Great architecture, I can tell you ;-)) Every possible square millimeter will be "efficiently used", we will admire its comfort and automatic systems, we will mirror ourselves on the shining surfaces, we will praise the central heating and the new totally hygienic bathrooms, and then... we will still miss the old house. The house that was a home. Brave new world for real, isn't it? ;-)
Take care and many thanks my sharply seeing viking maid.
Sad when buildings are being demolished:( A wonderful old house down the road was being destroyed the other day and removed leaving only bricks in the garden. Sad especially when thinking about all the people that have lived their lives there. Take care, Annemette
