Location City -  Lindisfarne
State -  NORTHUMBERLAND
Country - United Kingdom   United Kingdom
About June 8th in the year of 793 Vikings looted the church on Lindisfarne leaving many dead in their wake.

This was the first major Viking attack England had ever known & it sent shockwaves throughout the Church.

Alcuin, the greatest scholar of the day wrote, "What assurance is there for the churches of Britain, if St. Cuthbert, with so great a number of saints, defends not its own?"

Maybe the moral of the story here is that things always happen for a reason.

History mainly shows Vikings as bloodthirsty thugs with names such as 'Eric Bloodaxe' (Viking king of Northumbria I may hasten to add) Though what is less known is their skill for trade and economy. Once they had finished pillaging our land, they then settled & brought some order to 'us heathens'.

The same is shown throughout history... alas, it seems to take a tide of blood for humans to 'evolve'... maybe some day we will learn a less bloody way of helping others become more 'civilised'!!

I guess with what is going on in the world at the moment we are not yet there.

Keep well & bright

Thank you Clay.

This is two photos merged together to make one. The Viking you see is a full size model & I overlayed him over a photo I had previously taken of Lindisfarne castle, then I digitally edited to give an old painting style.

The words & thoughts behind them... purely my own

Thanks again... comment greatly appreciated
Keep well & bright

Nice image, the signiture seems to indicate that it is a painting but the play of shadows is characteristic of sculpture?
The history lesson is characterized of depth of thinking & feelings beyond the mediocre.
