Thanks Thilo, As soon as I saw that tree laying there I thought about some of Fadel's images. I only wish there were a few nice clouds in the background. I tried putting some in, but I was never happy with the way it turned out. I think those Seagulls had a little something to do with the bleeding in white :) Andre

Hi Andre,
well I see the Fadel influence =) Awesome work, especially the grain part and the title. this tree seems to bleed - in white.
best wishes my friend and sorry for the absence, Thilo

Hi Fadel, I'm glad you like this one. I know what you mean about adding a little blur to soften the effect of the noise. I did try it that way and it gave an almost "leather" textured look to the image. That was okay too. Not sure why I didn't go that way. I guess I wasn't really trying to be to subtle :) I even made an attempt to do the clouds in the background, taken from another image. I didn't like the look of it much because I was having trouble matching the clouds and light to the water. I appreciate the work you must do with shadows and reflections to get the illusion of reality with multiple images. I guess the easy way is just shoot the clouds in the scene in the first place. :) Another thought on the noise. I suppose I could have gone with another layer of real grain from another image, like I did with that goat on the chair pic. Oh well, lot's more to play with. Andre

This is beautiful Andre! and very nice work with the noise, I can understand Jon's point and probably if you blur it a bit it would blend more subtly, but nonetheless this is beautiful! And thank you very much for the nice reference :) Looking forward for more.
P.S you should visit Hamilton beach on a cloudy day :)

Hi Jon, I understand how you feel about the intentional noise. When I first saw some other people using similar techniques (Fadel J) amongst others. I wasn't sure about it either. It is definitely the kind of thing that tends to grow on you. What happens to me is I tend to get too close to the image while preparing it and end up getting a little sick of it myself. Then after a little rest from the image, I start to like it again. Today, for instance, to me, it looks better than ever:) Tomorrow I might not feel the same way :) I think something similar happens to song writers when working on CD's.
For another example of something along the same lines, but using a "real film" grain layer, check out my image "The Incongrous Goat" That one definitely takes some time to get used to. Andre

Hi, Andre - I quite like the graininess and the desaturation... I'm not sure how much I like the noise effect on the background, where it stands out very strongly as an obviously purposeful addition. Hm. Perhaps it is because it is so obviously purposeful - the effect is interesting but to me might be more aesthetically pleasing if it was more subtle (mimicking the grain of a very high speed film, for example).
Cheers,
Jon

Hi Kes, The tree is a good size one that was washed down the river in last years mini flooding that we had for a little while. I now realize there really is no plain of reference for the size of the tree. I'll bet most people will assume it is quite large though. The effect of the water and sky blending together is even on the original, before I altered it. It was one of those evenings when the temperature almost created a fog, but not quite. For more examples of images somewhat similar to this one, and others much more creative, check out Fadel J's Usefilm portfolio. I'm sure you will like his images. Andre

Hi Andre, this is an interesting subject...I wonder what it is doing there. Great grain!! I like the way the water and sky almost blend together. Kes

Hi Marcus, Actually this was taken on our trip to the Atlantic coast! ;) (not really :) With this one, I tried to copy a bit of Fadel J's style. He takes a lot of photos about 50 miles down the lake shore.
ps I told you that shot of the owl on the tracks would get some kind of award! Andre

Thanks Dave, The noise is abviously intentional. Interesting how like you say, the noise has little effect on the tree. I suppose it is because of the variation in the tones and detail in the tree. Andre
