It's an eye catching image - when you see the thumbnail you want to click on it and see what it is. As a geometrical abstract I think it would be neat, however, it doesn't do the flower any justice, and whether it is lack of time or lack of knowledge, the PS work is in my opinion sloppy and detracts from the image.

You should't mistake someone short of time and limited only by his imagination for a beginner.

ok, tips & tricks
In these situation try to use an undirects light.
You should take some white paper or white canvas and surround the subject. If you use the flash put a white canvas in front of it to have a diffuse effect.
....and close more the shutter aperture.

Bye

The passion flower is so beautiful, but there are far to many shadows in this image on the surface that you placed the flower on.

I've attached a photo that I have taken of the passion flower also. There are also many shawdows on mine, but I think a bit better composed.

I agree with Alessandro Capelli and that yours is not worthy of the POD.

oooh yes.. white piece of paper! ah ah..you don't think that people do not notice anything..it's just enough watch the edges..you can see clearly that it's a PS work! But isn't this the problem.. if the work was well made! The flower it's bad focused, bad use of DOF..and the PS work it's so badly..but you're a beginner, it's normal..
i repeat, not deserved POD..

Well,
the edge of the flower is not well cutted from the background. I don't know how was the original shot expecially the background but it seems to be hand cutted and sticked on a white paper (maybe is also the effect of the shadow).
Try to look for a tutorial in internet to learn one of the several method to do these kind of cuts using levels or other tricks (I saw one but it was only in Italian)

If you close much more the aperture of the lens (higher number, like f22, f32 etc.) you can have a better sense of focus (what it's usually called Depth of field or DOF in the forums).

Bye

What would you have liked to see in the background?
The background in this case was a white piece of paper.

Could you be more specific as to what mistakes you see in the method used and how to improve them?

Hello Frank,
welcome to UF.
Hope to see more and more improvments in your capacities with PS and usage of your camera.

Surely you need to spend more time in the way you can crop images (PS have several... magic stick but also selecting colours from background...) but also the usage of the aperture to have more depth of field

Bye

Sincerely I not appreciate this image. it would have been much better without the elimination of the background with PS.
not deserved POD, imo..

Congratulations for POD. A very good capture of a very striking blossom, great job of isolation on white.
