Hi Josh, A very powerful shot, the combination of toning, contrast and subject sketch a strong atmosphere, quite gloomy and ominous. Also, the DoF is well chosen and I really like the sharpness and crisp details in the lock.
The composition looks a bit "forced" to me; almost centered vertically, but extremely off centered horizontally, even cutting off a bit of the lock. Although that works with the atmosphere, I think maybe a slight tilt in the camera, introducing a stronger diagonal in the composition could perhaps balance the comp. a bit more.
Another thought is to go even more towards the extremes, and exclude the margin on top, also cutting off a portion of the lock on that side. (by panning down a bit; wouldn't change the image aspect.
Another thing I feel a bit ambiguous about is the lack of contrast and detail in the shadow areas. Although that fits with the dark quality and atmosphere, a bit of contrast could've helped in rendering the photo a bit more three dimensional, if you see what I mean.
Excellent photo Josh!!! i love lock shots and i'm always on the look out for interesting locks, this my friend is one of those locks. Great dof, beautiful tones and details. great job.
