This is a Wellington Tree Weta(Hemideina thoracica) that has decided to live in my letterbox for the last 2 days,makes getting the mail very interesting!Weta's are referred to as the dinosaurs of the insect world,they've remained virtually unchanged for 190 million years.There are more than 100 different species falling into 5 main groups,Tree,Giant,Ground,Cave & Tusked. Many species are rare & endangered,particularly the Giant Weta which can have a body size of 8cm & weigh up to 70 grams. Weta's are nocturnal & are omnivorous,eating plants & insects.
