About He's just graduated from high school, and has been playing bass guitar for a young hard-rock group. He's always hated having his photograph taken but for this live house performance he actually ASKED me to take a photo. It's an unusual genre for me, and I had to use flash, which I hate.

Yes, Mary. I was so pleased to be asked. Normally my hobby gets treated like some mental affliction... He followed up later by asking me to take a record of the dramatic society production at his highschool (he led the society for the last two years). His actual career choice is not music but the stage (behind-the-scenes stuff). The stage photos came out well, but nothing suitable for Usefilm... just simple "matter of record" shots. He seemed pleased and I gave him the CD. I appreciate your comments, Mary, but was disappointed to see no more photos from you.

We always ry to do what our children ask. This is a gret shot of your son, Roger. The lighting is very effective. I love his look of concentration and love of music you caught and am so glad he is not looking at the camera. This is much more relistic and dramatic. Your son must love this. Isn't it great when our children recognize a talent that their parents have and ask them to use it for something for them. I think it is a wonderful compliment. Good luck to your son in his music career.
Mary

What a great picture, kids often hate their picture taken. Wonderful rock star capture. Yes I hate flashes as well. I don't even have one LOL. My cameras have non built in either. I rely on high ISO and fast lenses and natural light. But for this that is a bit far fetched so you were right to use a flash.

Yes, Ray... the live house session was one of the few times when I've been grateful for being really hard of hearing! I hate to think what the kids are doing to their ears in those places. Zooms? Nah, I just zoom with my feet. My set of lenses is mostly FSU or E.German cheapies, so no big investment in any of them. The most expensive (and the most valuable) are my fisheyes....! 200USD for one and 110 USD for the other. Best bargains I've ever made. Get a LOT of mileage out of 'em.

This is a great shot Roger and I love the crop to your composition. Loads of atmosphere to the shot which your flash didn't destroy and I am in awe of you attending such a function. I too hate using a flashgun but now again we are left without any other option.
WOW! that is quite a line up of lenses and I see you haven't got a zoom lens. I just use the one but have mixed feelings about it. Take care Roger, all the best.....Ray

Hi, John... The ceiling was painted black, so bounce flash was out. I quite like the results of using bounce flash, although my preference for wider angle views often runs into the limitations of flash coverage. I use an ancient Panasonic unit (huge) which has diffusers that give an even spread up to 20mm FL (w/std 35mm lens). With bulky flash unit, all manual camera, and an age about three times that of the young things at the live house, I felt a little, er, conspicuous.

Learn to embrace the light Roger. I am actually going to take a class in flash photography in May. he he he (I typed but corrected flesh photography - not that would be cool)

Thanks, Rina. And for the link--great stage photo but kind of a weird self intro, right? I was at a live house crowded with young things which restricted the angles I could use. I'm always looking for gaps in my lens lineup, but as I already have 8, 16, 20, 30, 40, 50, 58, 100 and 135 I guess it would have to be a nice bright 75 or 80mm? Hmmm. Zeiss makes an 80/1.4.... Hmmm.

Oh yeah... only my favourite guitar in the whole world!! I know how you feel, I haven't been taking photos very long but already I hate flash and will try to avoid it at all costs. You'll have to go shopping for some more lenses (like as if you don't have squillions anyway)... Check this guy out if you have time: http://www.usefilm.com/image/1041353.html
Not the same lighting conditions I'm sure, but the prime he uses seems pretty cool. I know he's got heaps more images tucked away, but needs some encouragement to pull them out... He may be able to give you some tips, if your son ever asks you to do this again!

Cheers
Rina.
