Very interesting. I think the use of a fill flash may have helped this out a bit. It would have enabled you to use a smaller aperture so you could keep those hotspots from blowing out to white while still allowing some detail in the shadow areas. Also maybe try cropping slightly tighter on the right to get rid of that little green spot so all you have in front of you is wood. Neat shot.
