About Yesterday my husband and I had the opportunity to go up to the landing of a logging site, and I was able to take pictures. This guy is called the chaser. As logs are brought into the landing his job is to limb and buck them for loading.
The day was overcast and a bit drizzly. I'm hoping to get another chance to go up there on a clear day. I guess the view is pretty phenomenal.

Kathy, I like the action and dynamic tension suggested by the angle of the subject and the two main logs. The smoke from the chainsaw completes the effect.

Hi Kathy.
This looks like parts of Vancouver Island. Patches of forest areas cleared from logging. One those occupations of the northwest that for years many opposed etc etc however I am sure the man with the chainsaw has to feed people at home also.
Nice colours captured here.
Take care..Brian

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique This is quite unusual and very well captured! For all the activity in the foregroud, the checkered mountains in the background make a beautiful contrast.Love the wood colour in the foreground!

What an interesting subject Kathy. This would be a great series for you to do. Not something we see everyday (unless you're a logger of course!) and with a backdrop like that, I suspect you'll capture some spectacular shots. Wonderful journalistic post.

Cheers

A very emotive shot really. In oother parts where trees have disappeared so has everything else.If i were you i would visit quickly before all is gone. However I think this is a wondeful environmental portrait which you have captured so well. I have now read your reply to others and note that the future has already been preserved.

Danny

Hi Kathy,
A Great shot of a guy doing an honest day's work.
There is nothing more satisfying than getting to the end of a day of this kind of work.
I suppose I say that because I don't have to do it day in and day out :). My wife can't understand how I can work all week and then go to the cottage on the weekend and work in the bush. I tell her it's not the same thing. There are too few of us working at jobs now a days where you don't see any results from your day at the office.
This kind of work is such a great stress reliever.
Andre

I t hink t his looks pretty good with the soft light. I might be pretty contrasty in bright sun. Looks like a hard work job. The background worked you very well. Don.

Ina Nicolae Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 3/2/2006
Fantastic image Kathy! The way he stands there on the edge looks very dangerous, and the view is fantastic! I like how you placed him in the foreground with that plad shirt with lots of red and the orange helmet contrasting with the greens and blues in the hills below. The detail on the logs is beautiful, and the dust coming off the chainsaw is melting into the haze. I think a drizzly day is actually better for this mood, as opposed to a perfect sunny day, it brings a serious mood. Great image, very good documentary and "about"! Best regards, Ina

Very good working picture, especially with the dizzy background. The black frame could be a bit less heavy for my taste however, Kathy.

Hey Kathy, this is great photograph, love the very well titled action shot.
Indeed well composed, I love how to show us a logging site.
I think the view of background is very well framming this capture.
Well seen, nice work as usual my friend!

Have a nice day!

Hi Kathy, I'm pleased to hear that its not erosion and that the forest is being properly managed.

I neglected to say last time that I liked the shot, good saturation and focus in the foreground and with the background all being distant it really gives a good feel of the height of where he's working.

hi,perfect example for the "from the field"category which many on UF misinterpret...this is a quintessential PNW image showing a logger at work....good clarity on him and the FG area...very nicely composed with a good dof....nice to see the plantings sprouting up in the BG.....regards,gayle

Good working shot, Kathy! You've captured the action very well, with the cloud of exhaust surrounding the logger. I like the way you've included the background as well, to tell the whole story.

For an overcast and drizzly day you certainly coaxed some color out of this one! It's very eye catching...unusual and something one doesn't see everyday for sure. I betcha he would like a copy of this...even though he HAS been in Loggers World 3 times. I'm looking forward to the series (?) Great job Sissy.

Thank you for viewing my image and commenting, Bruce. What you see on the hill in the background is not erosion, but areas that have been selectively logged and replanted. The lighter green areas that you see are already well on their way to reproducing what has been logged.
