Thanks Brad. This shot is far from being my best architecture abstract and me my self are not so satisfied with the result. (I know you said nothing about that) But i´m fascinated by this building and have returned many times to remake abstracts of it and the reason of my fascination is many.....when i moved to Uppsala i find this as the ugliest builiding in town. but the last years i have changed my mind. I have red what they said in new when it was build, and the (former) professor in aesthetics(philosophy about art...) said the exterior reminded about cake paper. Well, does it? Thats was rather my question when i took this shot. :))

Jeanette, It's very easy to dismiss a piece of art OR architecture quickly, because it doesn't immediately make a statement. I have learned to reserve judgement on those items, as I usually find myself intrigued by that which puzzles me. You have captured in a very frank way, exactly that... a style which says both "nothing new here" and "look a little closer". The style is solid and will withstand time. Your personal style so clearly bears out this theory.. Here are the lines. Here are the angles. Here are the shadows. Your vision begs to judge the strength, not the whimsical. You clearly rock.. ..Brad

may be i dont like this facad but sometimes the architect fall in the trick of "paper design" and "reality" so,, forgive him.. and this shows how it is important to make a jury before starting to build
perfect angle and shadows..

Jeanette: That's the nicest thing anyone has said to me for a good while. I am encouraged to go out and take AWFUL BUILDINGS. I hope I do not embarass you when I say that one Condom maker in Tokyo has built a tower office block. And they believe that form should follow function. So you can imagine what their building looks like. (Really!!)

Hmm. If that's one of the most ugly buildings in the city, then Tokyo would be full of unpleasant surprises for the critics. I've even thought of collecting some of the most egregious examples! But who would care to look at them or comment?!?!

HI Ina and thanks to YOU for homepage :))) I find this building very interesting and depending on how the light hit the surface the shadows are and create so different patterns. This day the snow still was there and i was also satisfied to capture the blue sky within the upper structure. I saw in some German famouse architects that this kind of surfaces on the walls was common down there ...so the link to Bauhaus is not long...
Thanks Ina, jeanette

I can't understand why anyone would consider this an ugly building. I too think it's quite fascinating with the interesting shapes and shadows. I remember a similar building back in the 60's in Sydney Australia. It was a huge multi level indoor car park and even as a small child I loved going there and always asked my parents to park there if we had to go to the city. I think this has lovely interest and great textures. A great shot Jeanette. Also congratulations for the front page Featured Critique.
Cheers - Ann :)

Hi Jeanette, and congratulations for the FP - I initially wrote a long comment, but then I cut it down. It was the exhuberance of the 60's - a 180 degree turnaround from the austerity of the Bauhaus which dominated modern architecture, and the austerity of the Second World War. It was a need to break with the past, and although the results may not be a marvel of esthetics, it has its own place in history - like abstract art, for historic reasons. The same happened with the Art Deco district in Miami, many of the buildings were considered ugly, they were run down, and got demolished until a group of people decided to fight to preserve them. Today everybody enjoys the ones who escaped the wrecker's ball. This may not be the case for everything, but it's people like you who can see beauty beyond the "ugliness."

Like the angle composition, rather than a plain straight shot. Looks like many car cylinder head gaskets put together. The pattern makes nice shadows. Is there snow on the top or just part of the building? Nigel

Your picture is a great composition with pattern and shadows, and it has that retro feel Jeanette, but the architect must walk with his chin down when walking by this creation! Maybe in a couple of decades it will be admired as "historical" - it's all relative. Ina
