A spectacular landscape, with a somewhat surreal element in the form of shed antlers looking like an alien life form. I also like the sharpness via the Leica lens...how I miss my Digilux II. Sigh.

WOW! We went from Fairbanks to Denali, to Anchrage - Kenai Peninsula (Homer) and then up to Glenallen (Wrangell), to the Yukon border and back to Tok and Fairbanks. I don't think I bumped into you, 'cause I would have remembered that girl with long hair and Christmas garlands :)

Ina, You're kidding me. I also was in Alaska last summer. Drove right up the Alcan from California also through BC and Yukon and all over Alaska in our motorhome. I'll bet we passed each other or maybe even bumped into each other somewhere along the way. We were looking to buy a house up there but decided against it and came back to Oregon. I too didn't get photos because of the fires and also because we were always rushing around looking at real estate. Talk about a small world huh. :)

Hi Ann, bring the rotten pumpkin and the lizard - LOL!!! We were in Alaska last summer, we drove 4,000 miles around the interior to the border with Yukon. The pictures from Denali are OK, the rest didn't turn out too good because there were forest fires and poor visibility. In Denali you can't really take your time with pictures because where the best mountain views are, you can only get by shuttle bus, and they stop very little, and not necessarily where the best pictures are, but where the parking lots are. One trip by bus lasted 13 hours and you bring your own food and water - he-he - no restaurants along the way, although YOU can become the meal of day if you encounter a grizzly.

A frozen waterfall party sounds like fun. You bring the rotten pumpkin for the BBQ (to keep warm of course) and I'll bring the lizard. ;)
Isn't that always the way Ina...so many photos and so little time to post them all. :)
I hope you will post some of your frozen waterfall images some day so I can see those.
I too have taken partial views of the falls. They are coming up next. I haven't delved into the panos yet. Maybe later. The next time I get such an image I'll leave it larger and give it a go.
When did you do this trip to Alaska?

Hi Ann, and thanks for your in-depth comment! I also have a cache of frozen falls from around here, so maybe we'll throw a party! Mine are partial, though, and more concentrated on details, whereas you are the grand vista type. Have you tried a vertical panorama yet? I think that is the perfect subject :)

Hi Ina, WOW I sure have missed a lot since I haven't posted much. I doubt if I will catch up and I won't even attempt to do so but I will start with this one.
I love this. Did you carefully position these antlers in this wonderful balance for the photo? (just kidding) I expect that's how you saw them and shot the photo. What a find. Great photo and I love the shape of it and the shadows it made on the ground. I'm surprised somebody didn't abscond with that but thankfully I guess it's a bit hard to do in a national park.
I would have liked to have seen the tops of the mountains in the background but I also understand they aren't the main subject here either. Very nice tonal depth. Great shot and very well seen by your keen eye for the unusual.
Thanks for your great comment on my Frozen Falls image. You must eat, drink and sleep Usefilm to have caught that one so quickly. (haha)
Good to be back again. I have lots of frozen stuff I'll post over time so stoke up your fire.
Cheers - Ann :)
PS - this has become quite wordy. Making up for lost time I guess. (haha)

Hi Andre, it is always a grand opportunity to photograph such places. I was there last August, the weather was HOT and sunny. Unfortunately for the second half of the trip we had almost zero visibility, as the whole area between Yukon and Anchorage was covered in dense forest fire smoke. Therefore I missed the entire Wrangell - St. Elias mountain range. We also blew a wheel on the rental car and wasted two days trying to replace it - and missed some other awesome scenery :( Still, it was unforgettable.

this is perfect my friend,i really find it great by all means,a friend on photo.net once told me that having all of the montains top's within the image is not always necessary ,cropping is even done some time to come to the right limitations and in order to stablish a better composition.your image do have all of that high quality skills and the steps backwards as Hugo segested are not really of that much concern here .you are always coming with images which are so beautiful and technically very highly rated." its just some times others do not like people to come up with better things than what they would come out with, and this is very human and natural. all of the best my friend.

Hi Mark, and thanks for your second comment! I wish I could have taken a shot from the ground up, looking through the arch formed by the antlers. The antlers were located at a bus / rest stop along the route in Denali. The only access into Denali is by shuttle buses, which make very few short stops. I had to wait to take my turn at the antlers, as dozens of tourists were taking pictures. To avoid the shuttle time constraints, or to stray from the highway, one needs to hike or stay at one of the campgrounds inside the park. Photographers with a proven portfolio can apply to obtain a special photographer's permit to get into the park by individual car, beyond the first few miles. The park services are trying to preserve wildlife and keep the tourists away from danger, mainly from the bears.

Thank you Mark for your great comment! I had this picture in color sitting on my hard drive, and looking very plain, until I turned it into B & W - and the contrasts started to appear. I'm not a B & W fan generally speaking, but some subjects are much better represented in B & W, especially when strong shadows are present. I'm trying to revisit some of my older pictures to see what else might work, and thanks very much for the continued support :) Best regards, Ina

It came from beyond!! Excellent Ina. The barren landscape and the unusual shape of the antlers put me in the mind of a space alien invader.
Excellent composition and placement of the antlers right-center of frame, which seems to balance very well with the perspective of the hills behind. I also like the way the lines of the main subject cut across the background lines of the field behind it. Also, I think the monochromatic nature of the shot calls more attention to the textures and lines, a feature of this shot, than full color would have. There are a lot of subtle aspects to this shot working together. Your already top flight work seems to become even more refined. Congrats!

Thanks Hugo for taking the time to write and to consider all these details, I really appreciate your input! My Digital Rebel broke down the second day of the Alaska trip, so I had only the Panasonic (4 MP camera), without a true wide angle. The lesson for next time is to take more shots from different angles, and more cameras! Best regards, Ina

Hi Ina, thanks for your reply, always interesting to see the reasons that affect a decision after having thought about them for a while. I do see the limitations, and I think you have chosen the best possible solution, can't think of any other way...
... except, perhaps, by chosing a POV a few steps back (if possible, of course) and maybe even a bit lower, if you see what I'm getting at. That way, you wouldn't have the problem of cutting the mountain top, and the few steps back would've provided more options, maybe even using the tree on the right. Another solution could've been to take one or two steps to your left, using the shrub on the left as a frame, and including the shrub on the right into the composition. Just a few thoughts. Interesting dilemma...:)
Cheers,
Hugo

Hello Hugo, and thanks for your great comment! You have a very good point about the crop, I also feel the space at the bottom needs to be bigger. My limitations came from the original shot, where - if I kept the 4:3 ratio, and I weren't to cut the mountain top, I had to almost center the antlers, and I had another shrub on the right. See my dilemma - I'm attaching a full frame below:

Hi Ina, very powerful shot, the antlers in the foreground break the vast emptiness of the scene beautifully, as does the imaginary diagonal line created by the antlers and the shrub. It counters the slope of the hills, balancing the image. Good shot. Only wish you'd left a bit more space on the bottom and on the right.
Cheers,
hugo

Hi Susie, thanks for your comment - no moss growing there :) but those things were heavy, real heavy! The caribou have very strong necks to carry such weights on their heads (see 2 pics attached in my reply to Kelly) ;-) I also picked up one moose antler and that was twice as heavy!

Ina, very dramatic scene and a warning message. It's Alasca - it's a beauty but the harsh land, fascinating land but challenging place, unspoiled yet so much though very photogenic.
Yes, it is a great composition Ina and very expresive one.
I like the antlers complemented by the strong shadows and the river bank bushes providing natural fill to the river flats. You got mountains in the backdground too, very natural and truly Alascan.
No doubt it's a great image and a complete one.
