Castoreum was used as an aphrodisiac and also against impotence and constipation, both probably considered blockages of the humours by ancient physicians. In medieval pharmacopias, even today in dubious healthfood catalogues, quacks claim castoreum helps quell epileptic attacks (& above). For such a nostrum, there is not a milligram of medical evidence.
The beaver lives (and creates) in pools, knows that he's hunted for his testicles, to cure ailments. When pursued, but when he can't escape, he bites off his own testicles, throws them to the hunter, to escape death. Sure, no mammal scampers away after losing its testicles.
