I see what you mean, Dan, and indeed HDR would give a good result here in the sense of avoiding that blow and still keeping details in the shadows. Still, as it is now, the blow puts extra tension to the image. Many times such "exaggerations" are very interesting for themselves (to me) like for example when overexposing reflecting leaves of a tree, or similar. It's then not perfect for getting each and every small detail, but in such cases, like on this one, it kind of adds the impression of a strong light source and makes the light very tangible. The question is of course when to go for that, and there can be no absolute recipes, but in this case I consider it a good possibility, especially because the strong light has good reflections on the water and also the bird seems to be taking a real good bath in sunlight. Something like that.
Cheers!
Nick

Hi Nick, thank you so much for your comment. It is much appreciated. I am not happy with the blow out of the white on the bird at the front. This shot would have been great as a HDR, but I didn't know anything of that back then. Plus I was limited to 2Gb card back then so wasn't shooting much in RAW which would have also helped some what.

What a beautiful bird dear Dan. Lovely details! Despite the harsh sun I think you did a great job with this one :) Hugs and kisses, Julie.

A very good depiction of the poser, Dan! The plasticity and anatomy of the bird is quite vivid. The perspective using the diagonal separation of background worked also very well in putting your main actor on an adequate scene.
The details are great over the whole image, except perhaps on that protruding rock at the bottom right, which doesn't diminish the quality of the overall impression. Your very nice balance of light/shadow surely helped the very detailed appearance - btw why do you think that the exposure was not as good? I find it great!
Good one!
Nick

Yes, it's a cool shot but the blownout chest is distracting. I can see clearly why you like it anyway! Lovely bird! :)

Ha ha ha, not close enough ;-). It was a bad day, he he he, the light was reflecting everywhere and this was the best exposed of the series.

Thank you so much David, yes I got this one all wrong ;-). It looked OK at the time of shooting but wasn't till later that I realised that the exposure wasn't set right.
