About there were northern lights happening every night that we have been in the Yukon. So i tried a hand held shot so that i could post an image for all of you out there in the more southern locales. I had the shutter open for 17 seconds and was amazed that it wasn't all blurry being hand held and all

Hi Tim,
Thanks for thinking of us Southernites :-)
This is a great shot, and remarkably sharp for hand-held @ 17 secs.

nice shot tim. i used to live up north (churchill) and we saw these often when i was a kid. aurora bor. is caused when electrically charged particles collide with gases in the earth's upper atmosphere. never see them over in asia, not in the south anyway. perhaps i have to get up to north china now...

hi Debarshi,

I am no expert but I believe it has to do with solar flairs hitting our atmosphere creating some kind of electrical disturbance that is visual

Very beautiful, what a treat to see these lights, I like the composition and the way the lights so nicely show off the details of the trees. Alison

Absolutely amazing! This will be the result of the enormous sunspot that's been causing quite a stir and has only recently actually turned towards us - so we should expect quite a bit more activity!

Nice shot, must be great to see this in real life. Thanks for sharing.

What's your technique for holding still for 17 seconds?

You lucky bugger. I have been following the activity of sunspot 798 on Spaceweather and so far we have missed out on the great display here in the Southern Hemisphere. Cool shot and must be wonderful to be there on the night. Cheers John

17 secionds handleh ? You have a natural tripod or handpod Timm. Brilliant aurora lights. Why does this happen ? I mean the lights ?

Excellent shot! Hard to believe you held the camera that still for 17 seconds. You must be a surgeon. I saw my first aurora borealis in person a couple years ago here in Virginia after the sun spat a massive loogie. It was all red and nothing compared to this photo. Thanks for sharing!

hi Tim, a remarkable shot for handheld! My recent aurora shots were 30 secs on tripod and I found it hard to keep them sharp! best, Nick

Nice one, Tim! I love these lights, but we only get them occasionally here, although they've been out a couple of times recently, of course not when I was able to get away from the city lights!
Thanks for bringing them to us!
Dave.
