Hi Tamara,
Yes, extending the distance from the subject to the film/sensor plane also increases the "Depth of Field".
Try to focus 1/3 of the way between the closest point you want in focus and the furthest point.

Yeah, I wasn't sure what to do about that. F/8 is as small as my camera will go. I guess I could have taken the shot from slightly farther away and then cropped if I really wanted this particular framing? Would that have made a difference?

This looks very yummy. I love avocados.
The image is a bit dark overall, maybe could use some levels adjustments.
Also, the DOF is very shallow, even at f/8.0 so unfortunately the seed and the back of the right half are out of focus.
