Gateway National Recreation Area covers three different sections in NY & NJ. The Sandy Hook portion, in NJ, was used since Revolutionary War times to guard the entrance to NY Harbor. The British controlled it throughout the war, thereby controlling NY Harbor. In 1895, Fort Hancock, with its large coastal guns, was erected on the peninsula to protect NY Harbor. When the Cold War came around, Fort Hancock became the home of one of a series of missle sites that ringed New York City to protect from aerial attack. In 1975, the National Park Service took over the area and restored the old buildings and radar stations.
