Here's one that I tried bringing a bit of colour back into the trees while still maintaining a bit of your blue motive. Hope you like it! Cheers, Ben

Hi Chris, I say under those dark conditions you have done a great job. I also understand your motives in colour. However I do agree with the others about the crop at the bottom. It would have been ok if the claw was a bigger proportion than the tractor. Again different people have different tastes so take in what you think is sounding. Anyway here's my little attempt to fix up the crop problem. I hope you like it! Cheers, Ben

This is a great picture, unfortunately the biggest problem here is the highlights, imo. It's a very bright contrast scene. To keep the contrast that occurs in the snow drifts, this scene is somewhat required to be slightly underexposed, as far as I can tell. But in this case it looks good.
Anyway, I don't know if this helps give a visual any, but this is what I played around with for a minute, hope you don't mind. :)

Chris, too bad about the short crop beneath the blade....if you have enough time and patience, you can "create" more space in Photoshop, or another graphics package.
Artistically, to me, the shot's strength is in its' dark mood. If I may... I would accentuate the already cold, mysterious elements of the picture by darkening it even more. Work with, and take advantage of the unusual perspective that you have offered! ..Brad

Like Kevin said, first thing to do is correct the white balance, unless you're looking to create a moonlit appearance. If you do want your snow white, it's too late to do it in camera but your image editing program should have the ability to fix it. In Photoshop Elements 2.0 the tool is called Color Cast and is in the Enhance menu under Adjust Color. Other programs may be different but should have a similar function. The other two improvements I'd suggest would be to not frame quite as tightly to allow just a bit more space around (mostly in front of) the tractor and use a smaller aperture for more DOF to keep the back of the tractor and trees in sharp focus. On the positive side the basic composition is good. Placing the tractor off center prevents the shot from seeming too static and helps create interest. It's a well seen shot esthetically that just needs a couple technical boosts to help it out.

First thing I would do is white-balance the image. I'm not sure what setting you had it on, but there should be a feature to balance white (using a white card or gray card).. I highly recommend this especially when there is predominant whites like in a snow scene. Compositionally speaking, I would have moved back a bit so there is more breathing room beneath the blade of the tractor.
