About Shot under the last rays of afternoon light, which was barely peeking under the pecan tree shading overhead. Used gold reflector to catch as much light as possible.

I keep buying dahlias. If you saw my earlier post, that dahlia was pure lavendar and white. This one definitely has lemony yellows in the depths of the white, which I left untouched.

Tripod, mirror lock, f8 @ 1 sec.

PS used only to crop, levels adjustment. The goal here was to distinguish clearly between the sharp and blurred parts of the flower.

Tell me if the sharp part is too distracting or vice versa.

I like the sharp small petals and the way the short DOF allows the large petals to become less distinct, a sort of fade-out effect. I would, though, have liked to see the very near petals just in front of the sharply focused petal's also be in focus. By that I mean that all near/small petals would be sharp while more distant/larger petals would fade out of focus. But this is only the smallest critique and obviously a matter of personal choice/taste. This is a truely lovely shot.

You are AMAZING! This shot is perfection. The color - speaks for itself. The way you captured the delicacy is splendid. LOVE the DOF and the little bit of pollen on the petals that are not yet open. Fabulous.

very well composed and sharp in the RIGHT place. At aperture 8.0 this particular lens has a very good sharpness IMO. Admirable presentation.

Love the delicate details in each curve of the petals. The light is also extremely pivotal, as it illuminates each line, each curve to give definition.
I think that this is a nice way of using DOF to create a mood, a feeling. Nothing distracts me here!

I do believe the word the reviewer needed was "delicacy" (the true version of delicate-ness). :) And it most certainly is delicate - the light yellow and white areas add a feeling of springtime and sunshine to it.

Very striking, Mary. Its sensuality could rival Georgia O'Keefe's large paintings of flowers.

As someone else commented, this is not the usual flower photo. Its power goes way beyond the individual flower.

The compression in the photo gives the effect of the flower going on into infinity.

Cheers, Leora.

Fabulous, love the way each petal is a study in itself, and then the gradual fading out of the clarity - a bit like ice cream melting. The lemon depths in thisare lovely

Well marysue as always I'm indebted to you so I'll offer a few thoughts here~
>agree with the compliments, its up to par with your standards, which are high and getting higher. The fact you did this outside of the studio is testament to your skills.
>Sharp vs Blurred, while its not as sudden a transition as you'd normally see when someone's going for that effect, it works very well here, I think in this case the sharpness gives the eye a place to start and from there you get to enjoy the graphic explosion heading northeast and beyond.
>Crop, feels a little tight but works as is, however I'd consider maybe sticking to the classic sizes if only for framing ease (4x6 aspect ratio, or square, etc) but also I think the mind finds comfort in familiar ratios, since this image has that quality of (for lack of better expressions) nostalgia, familiarity, peacefullness, you name it, you might as well go all the way and give us a cup of warm cocoa, so to speak. If this image is already in some kind of standard size and I'm just not realizing it, ignore me as the fool you know I am.
>Where to go from here? I tend towards the notion that along with other kinds of familiarity to paint the picture in our minds, context of some kind can bring images like what you're driving at full circle > ie, the curious bee foraging in the petals, the gardener's green thumb poking into the frame, who knows what other possibilities lay on the other side of the flower equation?

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique I love it! The DOF lends the perfect feeling of delicate-ness ( I know that isn't a word, but I like it anyway. ) ;-)

Color is excellent, the sharp areas and soft areas work well together. Having the sharpness on a crash point is perfect, too.

Another sweet image, MS! Very nice.

I personally have resisted taking any more flower shots because I think "been there, done that", but then I see yours and think "Well! I guess it HASn't all been done before."
