Steve,i think this is a very beautiful photograph! the fact you got this effect at shutter time and not afterwards makes it even more fascinating,at least for me. I suggest you forget about "..very hard to judge distance through the streaky windshield plus the viewfinder of my camera..." ,and keep shooting whatever the conditions are as long as they inspire you to take a photo! ;-)
