Roger-I really enjoy your portfolio because of all of the character studies and this is one of the best. Before I even read that this guy was a prisoner at one time I assumed he was because of the tattooing. That is not to say that people with tattoos all go to prison but there are some tattoos that give you that impression. Either that or he worked in a traveling carnivale. Regardless, I really like this piece of journalistic type photo and I appreciate you sharing the story behind it.

Excellent, Roger! Such interesting and superb photo! Both as documentary (together with your text) but also alone it's very strong, because of his rough expression and body tatoos. Even without any text we would know that this guy has not had an easy life. But who knows... maybe he's still happier than many others living in a big house and having well payed jobs?

Very interesting Roger. Its interesting how the distracting background works to you advantage here by framing him. I suppose the topic of paying for taking photographs has already been done somewheres in the forums. Someone I read said something to the effect,"Poor people are not for photographing..They are for giving money to and making God happy" The gent does have character though. Good job - John B

thanks for this, it's the best thing i could have seen after today. u captured his soul.

Fascinating story, Roger. And a great photo to remember it by. When I was in theological college in Scotland a down-and-out asked me for some money and we got talking. It came out that I was a theolog, and he suprised me by asking who had been lecturing that morning. It had actually been a special guest speaker, the Moderator of the Free Church of Scotland. On hearing this he burst into tears and said "I was in college with him and know him well, but he continued in the Way and I turned back..." Makes you think!
