Actually, taking it even farther, you get this. I suspect if you increased the exposure quite a bit in the original scene, you'd get something very similar and quite smoothly colored and pretty.

Here's what happens if you fiddle with the contrast a bit - it fixes the "dullness" a bit. With that, this is a really neat capture.
