Wow! Very nice! I was tyring to do the same thing all last night with one of my flowers, and finding your image today...you just nailed it! I LOVE that underlit glow you have, and I just get lost in the depth. Amazing color tone, and fantastic DOF. Perfect image, and wonderful work!

Actually, it just happens that this image is in a book which came out this month. The book is called: A comprehensive guide to digital close-up photography, written by John Clements. Published by AVA - Switzerland. (ISBN 2-88479-062-4).
I cannot deny that I am a bit proud of it! ;-)

As for the lighting...very simple really: a halogen desklamp.
Robert wants to know how the rose racted...it didn't like it!
Halogen gets very hot and I had it very close to get enough light shining through the rose. It wilted right after the shoot I'm afraid...
And yes it was a digital (Sony F707), highest quality JPEG which is 2560 x 1920 pixels. You can make an excellent A4 print of it.

I don't readily compliment. This is photo is captivating. I would call it "10,000 Words" simply because it requires no title, no explanation. I cannot see how it could be improved upon. I would be curious as to the type of backlight you employed. Was it a simple tungsten low-watt bulb, an inky-dink with a fresnel, or what? How did the rose react: does it quickly wilt? An interesting change might be to use an eye-dropper and put some glycerin drops on the back side of the petals to resemble dew drops: they neither harm the plant nor evaporate or run quickly. Was this a digital shot and if so, how many megapixels so I know how large it can be enlarged. If not, what type of film?

As my children might say, "Wow! Way cool!" It really glows. I like it. IMHO the border is a bit heavy, or something in it is bothering me - it seems to take away from the "glowing" of the rose. But that's just my perception.
