The award was indeed more than deserved, Dave! Alone the way the gradients evolve so creamy on the white ceremonial dresses is enough for seeing how well you managed the exposure balance. They look so vivid in all the waves of fabric that one thinks of being able to touch them. The same exactly happened also with the corresponding gradients of the faces of the guys. Excellent reliefs!
The hue contrast of the guys against the darker ground allows them to stand off very powerful. They are indeed the main subject in that scene. I notice also that this contrast is supported also by the contrast of the details style between the main subject and the background. Onthe main subject rather creamy and smooth while rather hard and "stone-like" on the background.
I find the composition and the timing exactly as well managed too. The depth of scene is there, the balance is there, the well captured atmosphere too. The image has all it takes for good photography.
Great job, really, Dave!
