About The world's oldest polar bear, Debbie, died at Winnipeg's Assiniboine Park Zoo on Monday. This shot was taken last summer when she was still active at age 42, although you can see she wasn't in great shape at the time.
Here's a link to her story and history.

It only needed a bit more details on the fur of the bear, where it looks only white, Dave. This could also give you a richer color of the water. But still a very good image for the already available details and textures.

Cheers!

What a difference between Debbie's photos as a young adult & your great, albeit sad photo of recent times. Thank you, Dave, for another instructive piece of Canada & the north, also for your coment on my nestlings. By the way, their human parets were flying close bye, just waiting for us to go away, to be able to feed their offsprings.

I am not a lover of some old fashioned zoos Dave but these days enclosures have become better. So much so that I think I will pay our local one a visit in the Spring. It has to be said that Debbie probably had a longer life in captivity than some of the wild bears as mortality has risen in recent years.
This is a well detailed composition and you have caught her in a classic pose with an absolutely superb reflection. Well done to you my dear friend, another cracking post from you. Cheers for now.....Ray

because of the pose of the face and the head angle somehow I think the bear is a bit ...mad with her reflection? Really an excellent frame that you include the reflection in 100% and so tight!

Nice photograph Dave.
I love the way in which you have captured the reflection in the water of the Polar bear (Debbie), with the contrasting dark colours of the image giving a depth and feel to the scene.
Keep up the good work.
Regards, Nik.

Hi Michael, thanks for the comment! She was born in the wild and became an orphan. She arrived at the zoo at the age of 1yr.

Hi Dave,
I was reading about this in the Toronto Star the other day. She lived a long life. I bet the average lifespan in the wild is nowhere near that long. But, I doubt they are happier in the zoos.

Nice historic shot Dave, captured wonderfully. It's sad to see her go, but you have captured her when she was still mobile and will be remembered forever. Great shot.

Great story of an old yet fit bear. It is a great photo. The reflection is so pretty. It almost looks like Debbie was leering at her own reflection. It is great that she lived for 40 years. Was she raised in captivity or was she originally from the wild?

Great info and a wonderful tribute to Debbie. The loss of habitat in the wild is taking it's toll on her extended family as well. Let us hope that at some point we can slow down the degradation of habitat and human infringement on all of our species being pushed towards the edge. Thanks for the link, good info.
Be well, Stan
