Apenas para tus oídos, tengo otra suspicacia, a que aquí algunos de los jueces van por la gente que conocen. Gente que ha ganado más allá de concesiones y se sabe en el sitio. Pero eso es justo mi opinión.
(Y, aquí está un poco español sucio para ti... ha ha ha)

Now that you said it yourself brother, I must admit that I had seen this particular shot of yours (this one, which got PoD) and thought that by YOUR standards, it was pretty average. Hence I did not comment on it.
Whereas, on the OTHER two (which you gave me links to) I had already seen and commented !
So you see.. I couldn't agree more with you. If you ask me, among my own works, maybe the latest BIP that I got is the the BEST I consider among the 4 of my images that won award. But then, I have many better images in my portfolio, which got overlooked.
As you said, such is life !! :)
