About
As long as I am in a history kind’a mood. Let me continue… MM and I have several hundred 78 rpm records in our possession. They are from her grandmother, my grandparents and a great aunt. They are not worth much, in a monetary way, but they speak through the ages. I look over the stacks now and then and see names like: Horace Heidt, Gordon Warren, John Wilfahart, Frankie Carle, and Jerry Wayne. Yes, yes, yes, yes… I also have records in the piles by Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Nat King Cole and the like… but this is about those names that have been relegated to the footnote spot of music history. Were they any good? Did they have talent? Was Gordon Warren the 1930’s equivalent of our modern day Everclear? Not well known but loaded with talent? And in 70 years will some punk be looking at an Everclear CD and wonder what was all the fuss about? I have been on the prowl for three years. I am looking for a new, modern and sophisticated record player that has connections allowing me to take all the oldE 78’s and plug them into my computer. Then I can digitize and save… and listen to… what all the fuss was about 70 + years ago. For those of you who do not like history… these records, these bits of hard wax and acetate…. On these discs are what those who have gone before can share. I have been dancing from foot to foot, back and forth for years… wondering, waiting to hear what generations forgotten have saved to share.
Ursala, if you send me your address... I'll send the scratchy recorded CD's to ya. I have not copied them yet... but it won't be long. If you would really like to hear the old records as they are today, you can send me your mailing address here: kidney_pie@hotmail.com. I'll see what I can do for ya.
Just remember to keep the originals after you digitize them. For advice on equipment, etc, call your local state archives or historical society. A few phone calls will probably also track down a company that does audio digitization commercially, but given the size of your collection, you'll probably be better off purchasing the equipment.
I've got a couple of La Glorias. every few days my kid turns on the time machine and hears a singing detective l.p. and we waltz to "the old umbrella man", croon "I'll be around" by the mills brothers and evangelise with "ole moses put pharoah in his place" by Fred Waring & His Pennsylvanians. It is joy.
This internet thingy is wonderful. That is exactly what I am looking for!!!!
Pat, I do not write as often as I used to but I do send out late night comments and thoughts to a selected few. Could I put you on that list? It is titled "The Battered Few." I send music and writings and photos when I can. If you would like to be on the list just send me an email address to
