Thanks very much Sue and I should like to point out that you're 100% right. The two are very close but the color doesn't really add much . . . where the texture (wet rock) and form (perfect rule of thirds composition) are emphasized a tad in B&W. Both have issues in separating the subject from the BG and it's, frankly, just a difficult image to work.

Thanks Srna . . . I think the B&W . . . but - well, you know. I think if I had not given a color image to compare with and perhaps burned the horn tips in a tad it would have worked just fine. Once people see the color . . . there will always be the mind trying to choose but IF they had not seen it . . . who knows? Of course, my goal here was to get opinions and that I did . . . Like you . . . it's really a tough decision for me (and likely for many) and the choice is very close.

Actually... looking again I find I really do like the colour one... though you are right in the colours being too close to the animals, they really are nice colours & do blend in well.
Maybe you could do a bit of PS magic & use selective colouring to B&W the background against the goat... however, I do like how this photo shows how animals can nicely blend into their surroundings :)

Ahhh... what a fantastic photo Doyle :) I have this thing about goats now :) & although this one is not sticking his tongue out it's definately a fantastic catch & you could not have asked for a better background here. Love the colour also but think the B&W is my marginal favourite of the two :)
Now must get back to reading your comment in the forum... hope you are well & bright x

Thanks Michele . . . the three were the B&W you commented on here . . . the color original with the natural BG included in the comments . . . and the hue shift / partial de-sat BG on the v2.0 version. Sorry to be confusing but, to your credit, I got the information I needed anyway! LoL! I'm reminded of the absent minded Professor jokes I enjoyed as a child . . . they may understand Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity but they can't find the car keys (in their lunch bag) and are confused when they find a sandwich in their coat pocket!!!

I am getting a bit confused ... since I thought I'd already commented on this one--but maybe there is a slight difference(?)
Oh wait you mean your new colored version ..Yep I commented BUT I didn't compare it to the original , & the BW ...Ok now I think I've got it.
The original was good- for the animal as it camofluged the animal well--but not so good for us to view because of that...
The one you have posted now with the changes I like the best...but because it is much easier to view the Ibex. I don't think it looks fake at all...
It seems like I am missing one image of comparison-- and I'm sorry if I am... I will look back . I really like the fake one--but it DOES NOT LOOK FAKE ---I am not kidding .

Thanks very much for the in-depth evaluation and critical analysis. I burned and cropped the lower right . . . restored color, partially desaturated the BG and shifted the hue of the BG. I would very much appreciate a fresh look. I know you have limited time and I'm grateful for the time you already spent . . . but . . . IF you could . . . :)

Michele . . . I had considered a BG hue change and gentle (partial) desat so that the color would not match the animal so closely. I have posted a version that way and would LOVE your thoughts on it, particularly as it compares to the original or the B&W. I'm concerned it looks too fake. Your opinion?

Hi Doyle,
I've been looking at this photo for quite some time, and I don't really know what to think. That's not necessarily a bad thing (in most cases it isn't) but that's what I've been thinking about in this photo.
What I like about it:
The even, and non-descriptive background, as well as the v-shaped compostion; drawing the viewers' eye towards the animal. The composition follows the rule of thirds nicely, and and the view its'elf is rather unusual, which I do think is a +.
What I don't like so much:
I think the image quality can be improved upon; the shadows as well as the highlights (lower right) are just a bit too much, and block out the details and definition in those parts. Then, I think the B&W conversion is just a tad rough; the horns blend in with the background, where I think you could easily let them stand out a bit more.

Dear Annemette:
This guy lives in the Himalayas (hence the name) and not the Rockies. Uhhhh . . . you ARE blonde, aren't you! LoL! So it was at the zoo . . . but it may as well have been the Rockies because the place is full of hills. In fact . . . everywhere you go is uphill! Sometimes you have to walk (remember, they only have uphill at this zoo) hundreds of feet before you can buy a beverage. And they don't even sell single malt, 12 year old Scotch!!!! But you know me . . . I'll rough it for good photo opportunities!!

Thanks John . . . I completely agree and, therefore, your analysis is brilliant! LoL!
The textures and forms were pronounced in the B&W and the BG issue was the same in both . . . so I saw no real advantage in the color. Of course, we're in the minority here! I have a sense that many people always prefer color anyway and have noticed there is a marked preference (generally) to color wherever a choice is offered (Recall my SF cityscapes). Still, the strength of this site and in cultivating honest evaluations is that you do get some feedback that can be very helpful . . . particularly if you have a few willing to toss in the 'BS' flag on you! :)
And no, I doubt I upset him . . . he was eating and I think he was serious about continuing to eat . . . and I have a feeling that it wouldn't have been a good idea to try to take his food. :)

First off . . . I could TOO trek through the Himalayas!! In fact . . . I could downright traipse through Tibet and saunter up the slopes of Everest (or K2, or whatever the heck they call that big snow covered rock they have over there). And I WOULD too! But, unfortunately . . . I have responsibilities HERE. So I will content myself feeding my birds and knowing I COULD if I wanted too! :)

As has been pointed out . . . there is the same BG problem either way but as I mentioned to Dave . . . The B&W emphasizes the texture (and esp. the wet stone on the right side). That gave (to me) a plus absent from the color, though we are in the minority here. Still, I'm seriously considering a re-work with hue change and partial desat for the BG . . . cool BG color v warm colored Ibex . . . We'll have to see. :)

PS: Excellent analysis . . . you picked up on the form and texture differences. (Of course, I'm biased since you agreed with me and NOW I see the kind of guys you hang around with too! LoL!)

Thanks Dave . . . I appreciate the eye you have . . . and I agree - the issue isn't 100% resolved. I DO think, however, that the wet stone surface on the right is a tad more obvious in the B&W (B&W does seem better at conveying texture in some cases) and since, as you say, there is the same issue either way I had opted to at least pull out the gritty texture and wet surface using B&W . . . . although most people seem to prefer the color (as I think they often do). I am considering a hue and partial desat for the BG . . . maybe to blue stone (very pale) to see the warm colors of the Ibex v. the cool colors of the BG. What do you think? Try it or move on?

I love the coloured version of this image, Doyle, with the tonal range of warm earthcolours. Very nice composition. The Ibex looks at you quite seriously. Did you have this encounter in the Rockies or at the zoo?;-)

I prefer the B&W - the colour version looks just a little too yellowy brown for my taste, and I don't find the colour adds to the image. He looks very serious. Did you upset him?

Doyle, my vote goes for the color version...and for the same reasons as Debra. B&W seems a bit dark, at least on my monitor. I like the "natural" setting...it does look as if you happened upon the Ibex while trekking through the Himalayas...yeah right, YOU trekking through the Himalayas! ;)
Oh, one more thing...you look maaaah-vel-ous today.

Doyle -- I prefer the "grittiness" of the black & white and the de-emphasis of color and more attention to form and texture. Doesn't it look like this guy is slightly smiling? Were you telling him funny travelling Ibex stories. Then there was the one about the rabbi, the priest, a minister and an Ibex.......

Good shot of the ibex, Doyle! I think you've got the same problem with the background colour in both but I prefer the colour as well. He seems to stand out a litlle better, especially the horns.

I have attached a color version. I decided primarily to convert this as the wet rock became accented much more after conversion and the BG colors were too close to the animals colors in the original. What do you think?
