About Hello...I find in parks that the 'core' (?) or inside of the tree is generally cut out. I looked up information about 'coring' tree's but they talk about the core being the size of a pencil... this would be a nice fire log.... It's BIG... I learned that coring was to tell the age, and the rate of growth of the tree's in certain area's which leads me back to thinking this is a tree that got too big too fast in the wrong place and was 'cored'... Also I would have to believe that things 'do grow very BIG in Oregon'... I would appreciate anyone who can give me anymore information about thhis since I care, but don't want to study tree's as much as I do photography right now !
Thank You ....

Hello John...this hole in the tree is called the 'core' of the tree and is used to tell the age of a tree... sometimes they cut the core out of a tree in parks to stunt the growth with-out totally destroying the tee...I wrote about it in my 'about' and I Thank You for your very kind and curious comment my dear :))
Take care,
Michele~

Amazing... how on earth is that hole inside the wood??? hahaha...well it might be a very big bug there...uoops, becarefull!!! :-D it's surely unmique and some details of the around texture gives an idea that is NOT natural but somebody try to do that, nice macro Michele.
be well my friend!

Haa! You got me giggeling now MAry.. I know the dramatic version looks like a donut !!! A yummy donut ! There was quite the discussion on that large core.... I do think it must have been to control or check the growth rate being in the location it was tho ... I know Marlyce knows about this stuff so I settled with her opinion.
Thanks for looking tho , oh and making me laugh !!
Best Wishes,
Michele~

Your more dramatic view looks almost like something good to eat. I don't understand the large sized core, either.

thank you for the comment nessa and also the interesting information about stunting the growth of tree's by drilling holes in them.... sheesh 'who would've thought' ? The roots do grow so Big as we've discussed however and they can tear a building apart if they keep on growing !!!
I appreciate your time and comments always ...michele~

Michele, the hole in this tree is probably from removing the core and going down into the root. After a tree is cut down the roots are still alive and growing, over time the the tree will actually start branching again. Sometimes when removing the roots in not easy to do, they will drill into the core and put a chemical into the roots to kill it.
Also this is interestint shot with good colors, nice to see the green moss.

on the small image i didnt see what it was, and seeing the bigger picture, i still had to wonder what it was exactly. It could also have been a large crater shot from above. But well done on the close up. as a kid i was taught that by coring you could know the age of the tree. But in this case it is hard to tell i have to agree.

Good colour ..lighting and textures....nice composition..i don,t know anything about trees ..but we had trees of about 40ft at the bottom of the garden ..holes were drilled into it and a chemical put into the holes to stop it growing..nessa
